Bought one of these after using a relative's 5 year old Vax carpet cleaner. How technology has moved along, this unit is just fantastic!

With 2.5 year old twins ensuring that recurring juice, milk, milkshake, biscuits, cake and other random substances end up on the carpet it was time to invest in a good carpet cleaner.

This unit is great, took only 5 minutes to set up and put the hose, cable tidy clip in place and fill up with some warm water and cleaning solution.

The unit is loud and heavy (feels build to last and the 6 year warranty means Vax are confident in the build quality too), make no mistake! The suction is awesome, and the carpet is nearly dry when you're done - no more damp feet as you'd get with older models.

Now the tricky bit was always getting the fluff and hairs out of the nooks and crannies in the various plastic parts when you're done - not so with this model, the water reservoir and dirty water tank empty and clean effortlessly, and the main inlet where the dirty water is sucked in just needs to be run under a fast running tap to remove any debris. The longest time was taken in getting the fluff out of the scrubbing brushes - fill a sink and swoosh it about - there will be some plucking involved to get them 100% clean.

The unit comes with a second set of brushes for a hard floor, along with a squeegie attachment and hard small bottle of hard floor cleaner for the same application, and the hand held tool makes it great for cleaning the carpets in the car and household stairs - though the hose struggles to reach to the top and the unit is too large to perch on a step as you stretch to the higher steps.

Just remember to order some Ultra cleaning (carpet or hard floor) fluid when you order the unit - the supplied small bottles don't last too long!

We've has a dyson for at least 5 years but it recently decided it had had enough and refused to work. With a Springer Spaniel in the house vacuuming is something that we do a lot of (at least once a day) and it can be difficult to pick up the hair from the carpet with some vacuums. The DC25 animal is fantastic. It picks the majority of the hairs up from the carpet on the first go and has drastically reduced the length of time that it takes us to vacuum the downstairs of the house. the ball makes it so easy to steer too and it's lighter and smaller than our previous Dyson, although it is just as sturdy. I would recommend this for anyone with a particularly messy pet.

I won't repeat most of what's said here but will add a couple of my own extra bits. Firstly weight, people mention this a bit, the actual machine is not that heavy when empty, nothing more than a big upright vacuum. The weight comes once its loaded up with water, which is kind of unavoidable, a smaller tank would be a pain as you'd be refilling every feww mins. It is quite heavy when loaded up but nicely balanced and quite nimble on its wheels. The hand of VAX carpet cleaner held attachements are good quality, the upholstery one does spray a bit so you need to get used to its range. I also find that anything that need squeezing to release the cleaning stuff (also a steam cleaner) makes my hand and forearms hurt after a while (I'm not some athritic OAP either), maybe just me but bear in mind if you intend to use for upholstery/stairs a lot as could be an issue. In upright carpet cleaning mode machine is a breeze to use and does a brilliant job, couldn't be happier with it as results are great. The buckets of black gunk you throw away are real eye openers. Dry time for me in muggy sept weather was about 5-6 hours on a very thick pile carpet. Amazon price is pretty good as well. 5 stars all the way.

For many years, the only carpet washer I had was a Henry, one of those monsters with the face painted on the front. It was so messy to use and never seemed to get the carpet clean anyway, I eventually threw it out in disgust. I bought the Vax V-125 really just hoping it would just be a better cleaner but it was far more than that. I was thrilled with its performance, the carpets looked brand new after cleaning and the machine (once I had read the instructions!) was far easier to use with no mess. I thoroughly recommend this machine combined with the solution recommended by Vax - Vax Ultra, the solution is expensive but well worth the outlay.

I bought Dyson DC25 Animal to replace a 8yr old DC01. I looked at many models and decided to buy the Dyson DC25 Animal. Although we hoover nearly every day as our dog always seems to be moulting, I was amazed at how much more we picked up. We filled it twice and its still picking more up and so easy to use and steer with the ball!! Overall all very happy and with the 5yr warranty feel very safe. I love Dyson DC25 Animal

I totally agree with all the positive comments made previously. I purchased the VAX V-125 Carpet Washer for a specific purpose, which was to clean a flotex floor. I have to say it worked perfectly and brought the flotex back to its original colour, especially the walkways. Because it worked so well I am going to treat the rest of the house to an early spring clean.

I wanted to give VAX V-125 Carpet Washer a 4 star because I wanted to balance things out but overall, VAX V-125 Carpet Washer is a very good machine, works brilliantly and since I can't work out whether my lighting is brighter or the Carpet - I'm beyond amazed. I wanted to give it four because you will get niggles and I have used it on an very very old and well used Wilton. It needed a wash, it needed a new lease of life and I was hoping that would return. I think I was expecting too much. I got my colours back, it gave it some lease of life and maybe after a few more washes I could get that brand new carpet look... maybe I'm asking for too much. Overall though, VAX V-125 Carpet Washer makes you realise, Carpets do need a wash and you need a machine like this to do it. Don't delay!

Choosing a carpet cleaner is actually a much more involved decision that one may realize…follow these 6 steps and you will be more likely to have a good experience and clean carpets.

1. Carpet Cleaning Equipment and method – The only type of carpet cleaner you should let in your house should be using the Truck mounted Hot Water Extraction (HWE) method. This really should be your first question, if the answer is “NO”…keep looking. Many Dallas Carpet Cleaning companies use this method…but not all, so make sure you ask. Shaw and Mohawk who combined manufacture over 2/3 of the world’s carpet recommend this method….which makes it easier for me to recommend this without looking like I am simply recommending the method our company happens to use.

Carpet Cleaning Certification – Many Dallas Carpet Cleaners have plenty of real world experience, and unfortunately some of their success can be attributed to luck…..”as in” with no real formal in class training they should be lucky they have not ruined any carpet or upholstery. The two most recognized certifications are the IICRC and the RIA (formally the ASCR). This certification proves that the company has been through the coursework and passed exams pertaining to carpet cleaning, ask to see proof that the firm is certified or go to the IICRC web site at www.iicrc.org. This is another situation where the largest carpet manufacturers in the world are recommending the same thing that I recommend. As of January 2008, Shaw Carpet will require homeowners to prove they have had their carpets cleaned by IICRC certified cleaners in order to honor the Shaw warranty.

4. Carpet Cleaning Company, Insurance and Bonding – Make sure to ask if the company is insured and bonded, almost all Dallas Carpet Cleaning companies are going to say “YES”….so if you are really nervous….ask for a copy. Also keep in mind the difference in General Liability insurance and a Bond. The General Liability insurance will pay if a homeowner was to slip and fall because the carpets were over wetted, a bond will pay if the cleaner was to steal something from the house where they were working. Most homeowners are concerned about the insurance policy paying if the cleaner breaks something in the house, but not all general liability polices will pay in this instance….sometimes a separate endorsement is needed. Here is another scenario to REALLY keep in mind. Most of our insurance policies carry at least a $1000.00 deductible, so even if the cleaner has the offsite breakage endorsement, the policy is not going to pay up when the cleaner breaks a $900 vase. Homeowners really need to consider “Is this cleaner going to pay out of pocket if the $900 vase scenario happens?” Ask how long the cleaner has been in business, they will almost surely pay for any damages if they have been in business for a long time. My advice…put all your expensive breakable things in a place where even a careful carpet tech cannot accidentally break them.

5. Ask for your Professional Cleaners' references – Do a little homework on the company, ask for references (even ask for references in your neighborhood). Make sure the company is not only a member of the BBB, but also has a good record. There are Dallas Carpet Cleaning companies in our area that amaze me they are still in business, their record at the BBB is so bad it is obvious that all of their new clients do not check them out at www.bbb.org.

6. Cleaning Employees – Make sure to ask if the company uses employees or sub contractors. Ask if a uniformed employee in a lettered company truck will show up to clean your house. There are some Dallas carpet cleaning companies who are really not carpet cleaning companies…they are just marketing companies. They advertise, book the jobs….and sub it out to an independent carpet cleaner. In this situation the actual company who books the job has little if any control over the sub contractor entering your home, if a sub contractor breaks or steals something in your house you may have little recourse.
